Kinja'd!!!

I’m literally “rebooting” my life this time and I’m nervous as heck.

I just sealed a lease for a home with 1.5 acres on a lake in East Dubuque, Il. Plenty of room for toys but as is my typical luck with rentals.. No garage.. Sheesh!

I’m rolling out Thursday and it almost feels like I’m running away from something.

Did I mention I’m nervous? I’m really friggin nervous..

“No garage”

You have a kitchen, right? Tomato, Tamato.

That’s it! I can’t eat and have to force down my beers. I can’t wait to settle in and relax.

Not looking forward to that bit. I’m semi-seriously shopping but every time I look at my bank account right now I can’t help but think “but I could buy some cool cars with this :< “.

The garage thing can be mitigated with one of those tent-garages.

What are you specifically nervous about?

No garage, eh? I see a temporary building in your future.

Good luck dude!

Temporarily I’ll do something under the deck. A shed will be needed at some point.

New city, new job, new house. All about 4 hours away from family and friends. But it was the right choice. I needed a serious change and got it to happen.

Just closed on my first (and last) home purchase May 27th. I can only describe buying a home as both the most stressful and rewarding experience of my life. The first time you walk through the door knowing it’s “yours” is an amazing feeling.

I’ll be around. East Dbq isn’t that far out there.

I’m going to have to have a house warming BBQ at some point too!

East Dubuque? You’re in a seriously beautiful part of the Midwest. That area around the Mississippi down to Galena has some fantastic driving roads. The Wisconsin side too for that matter.

I went to school at UW-P about 15 minutes NE of you, and used to frequent the East Dubuque bar scene back when it was metal bars and strip clubs (its more family friendly now).

The area around the River Museum has been developed a lot in the last few years too and it pretty nice.

You aren’t joking! The way they carved into the hillsides makes the most mundane neighborhood interesting. I’m finally settled in enough to do some hiking along the river this coming weekend. And I know the dog is ready for it.

They really cleaned up East Dubuque from what I’ve heard. It’s still a bit Hillbilly though and I’m okay with that. Its character.

I was in college during its dirty days, and enjoyed myself there more than a few times. Since it was Illinois the bar time was 5am, so the clubs and bars would be largely empty until 2am when the bars closed in Dubuque, then everyone would flood over to party another couple of hours.

There was a concert venue there that would regularly host smaller metal and punk bands like Dope and Mushroomhead (Early 2000s, don't judge), so we would go down there with a group, kill some time in the numerous strip clubs, then see a cheap concert. Fun time for broke college students.

Damn! I feel like I missed out now. How long ago was that?

Right now its so dull around here even the Radio stations are boring. I’m not complaining. That’s why I moved here.

I want to say it changed in 2010 or so. Admittedly, it go pretty bad after I graduated. I think there were a few shootings that basically made the city say “everyone out”.

If you like live music, I believe a fair amount of bands come through Dubuque. I'm not sure how the bar scene in DBQ is currently, but previously it was always decent. Then you do have the good driving roads if you like that, the Mississippi for boating, and Madison isn'y too far either.

Downtown Dubuque is rapidly gentrifying. There are parts that look like a Mini Chicago now. Some old warehouses have gone Condo and there are some nice looking bars and restaurants. East Dbq still has the “blue collar” bars that I gravitate to.

There have already been a few good concerts and there’s a Car Show somewhere almost every day of the week. I can’t wait to July 3rd. That’s the Air Show on the river. I will not miss that.

One thing I noticed is that my stress level has plummeted over just the last week. I’m so relaxed all day and even wake up before my alarm every morning. I needed this.

That's great to hear. We were at the River museum a few months ago and I was amazed at how different it looked down there. I think they did a good job.
